omfg jane stop staring
That’s kind of what I thought the joke was in the first place, but I didn’t talk about it on my main blog because it wasn’t worth it at first (also because I felt like I didn’t have enough time to really sit and think about it too deeply). Regardless of my opinion, there were people getting hurt and upset. But I would like to reblog this here to at least help spread the word that no, Hussie wasn’t trying to be racist or mean. That yes, he did still realize that while that wasn’t his intention, he ended up getting a bad reaction from it. And in the end, he even altered the comic in response to the upset, even though he could have easily just said “hey it’s my comic not yours so too bad”.
Should he have had the foresight to see fans taking his joke the wrong way? Yeah, probably, but he’s only human, and we all make mistakes from time to time. He messed up, apologized, and righted it. He admitted to being blind to his own joke, and that’s a problem for many writers. It’s hard to interpret how others will see something when you already see it a certain way. I’m not saying anyone has to completely forgive Hussie or that you shouldn’t still be upset, but just recognize that he’s really done his best to make amends, and that his intentions were not to make a joke for anyone to use against anyone else in any way.
I just hope this stops the rage that’s been plaguing tumblr. Stop making fun of POC cosplaying Jane, and stop using Hussie’s mistake as fuel for racist remarks. And also, even if you weren’t someone particularly afflicted by the recent controversy, please try and have the decency to be understanding to the people it may have hurt. Regardless if people were right to get upset, feelings were still hurt, so have an open mind and be understanding.
